George and Sarah Field and family

A photograph of George and Sarah Field and their children taken in about 1864, when the family had a drapery shop at No 1 Spring Hill, where it joins Ventnor High Street.Eldest son Henry (second from the right in the back row) later opened another shop at 40 Ventnor High Street, just across the road from his father’s shop. In 1884 most of the family emigrated to Australia, only Henry remaining behind in Ventnor.
