“Ventnor breweries” is the title of a recent publication available from the Ventnor Heritage Centre, price £3. Written by Richard Downing it covers the story of Burt’s Brewery, founded in the 1840s and the subsequent Ventnor Brewery.
In 1840 James Courbold established a wine and spirits business at what is now the Blenheim pub. He also bought the existing brewery in 1844 and a number of public houses. John Burt later became a partner and the brewery was known as Burt’s Brewery, which was sold in 1906 to the Phillips family who maintained it for four generations.
Then came the Ventnor Brewery which prospered with many innovative beers until its closure in 2009.
